Digitization Specialist

The Digitization Specialist in the Department of Art History's Visual Resources Center (VRC) makes high-quality images of art and architecture for LUNA, the main database for art images used for teaching and research at UChicago. 

The Digitization Specialist plays an important role in the VRC’s deadline-driven production workflows for creating, expanding, and maintaining digital collections projects. 

The Digitization Specialist will gain experience throughout the entire digitization workflow, including:

• assessing materials
• image capture (scanning, photography) on a variety of equipment
• post-processing editing techniques in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom
• quality control
• and more

Working primarily from exhibition catalogs, this position may also have the opportunity to digitize original archival collections or other materials, including 35mm slides or two-dimensional works. The position will require extensive screen time as well as on-site work. Physical demands include the ability to sit and stand for long periods of time, and the Digitization Specialist must be able to accurately evaluate images for color fidelity.
 

Recent digitization projects include modern & contemporary Korean art and South Asian architecture and urban planning. We look forward to new projects this year from a variety of art history fields, styles, and time periods. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about digitization standards, color management, image research, and the inner workings of digital archives. 
 

The Digitization Specialist is an on-site position. The VRC is located on the second floor of the Cochrane-Woods Art Center and is accessible only by stairs. In general, the work week is during weekdays between 9am–5pm. Work schedule is reasonably flexible, but we do ask for a weekly schedule each quarter, and shifts must be at least 2 hours long. 
 

All majors are encouraged to apply. Students with an interest in art, art history, media studies, or libraries/archives preferred. Federal Work-Study funding preferred but not required.
