Jeff Metcalf Fellowship Grant for Internships for Odyssey Students
Career Advancement will offer a limited number of grants to second – fourth year students to fund unpaid internships and research experiences for summer 2019. Students will be selected based on their application and the quality of the proposed professional experience, which must meet the standard required by the Jeff Metcalf Fellowship Grant for Odyssey Students(see below). Students who receive funding are required to complete and fulfill the responsibilities and requirements of the Metcalf Program.
Students can apply to receive funding either for internships or for academic research projects. In both cases, applying students must have access to a supervisor. The supervisor must be physically present where the student is working and provide support and mentorship. In the case of research projects, the supervisor does not need to be a UChicago professor but must be affiliated with another research institution. Independent research projects or freelance experiences are not eligible for this fellowship.
To be eligible to apply students must have already received an offer. Please note: students are not required to have accepted an offer and are welcome to inform their potential employer that acceptance of the role may be contingent on receiving grant funding.
Stipends will range between $1,500 and $5,000. The amount will be decided by the selection committee
Career Advancement will offer a limited number of grants to undergraduate students who plan to intern or conduct research in the United States or abroad during summer 2019. You may also apply in the 3rd cycle to request additional funds to supplement funding you have already received from your employer or the University of Chicago. For International Students:
International students are eligible to apply for this fellowship. US work authorization is NOT required (please disregard Handshake's Work Authorization Requirements). However, be advised that the country where your internship is located may have different work eligibility regulations. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the required steps to be eligible to work in the country where your internship is located.
Please Note:
The University of Chicago’s working assumption is that travel to countries or regions with a US Department of State Level 3 or Level 4 Advisory is not permitted for undergraduate participants. The University also also uses as indicators the advisory levels published by the Centers for Disease Control and our emergency provider, International SOS. Thus, if the country or region to which travel is contemplated is listed as Level 3 or 4 in the State Department’s travel advisories OR has a warning level 3 from the Centers for Disease Control OR has an International SOS risk rating of High or Extreme, travel is assumed to be prohibited.
Students who wish to travel to one of these countries must petition the University. Prior to submitting your petition form, they must meet with Chiara Montanari, Associate Director of External Relations or Eric Benjaminson, Assistant Director of Study Abroad, to discuss your plans in light of the Advisory. You must complete your meeting before you submit your grant application. Since this conversation may affect your plans, please schedule your appointment well in advance of the grant application deadline. TIMELINE
There are three application cycles. Students who are not selected during the first cycle are eligible to apply to the second cycle, and third cycle if needed.

Please note: No late or incomplete applications will be accepted. The decisions regarding acceptance and funding amounts made by the reviewing committee are definitive and cannot be appealed. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the materials submitted through Handshake by the required deadlines. No new materials or updates will be accepted and/or taken into consideration.

Please note that the form requires you to upload an offer letter or email from your employer. The letter/email should include:
- Supervisor name and contact information (email must be a company domain)
- Physical location of internship
- Work hours per week
- Total number of hours for the summer
- Start and end date
ELIGIBILITY
The proposed experience must meet the following standards:
1) Your professional experience must take place during summer quarter 2019. Time period: June 15-September 28.
According to your class schedule and commitments, your experience may start/finish earlier or later. Please pay close attention to your spring quarter exam schedules. For the College policy on summer internship start dates, please refer to the On-Campus Recruiting Agreement.
2) You must have a direct supervisor.
3) You must perform work that provides you with a substantive professional experience.
4) Your experience must be unpaid or receive very little compensation.
5) All organizations are eligible for funding under this grant, including government agencies and for-profit organizations. There are two exceptions: 1) the organization is on the State Department list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations or otherwise sanctioned or monitored by the U.S. Government; 2) the organization was formed for the purpose of supporting a candidate for political office. Because the University is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization under the tax code, it is prohibited from participating in political campaign activities
6) Research Assistant positions are also eligible for funding.
7) Priority will be given to students with full-time experiences (400 hours over the summer). If your experience is shorter in length or work hours, you are still eligible to apply.
Please note: You are welcome to apply for more than one grant through Career Advancement. However, you will only be able to receive funding from one.
