2019 Jeff Metcalf Calumet Heritage Area Intern

Field Museum’s Keller Science Action Center

This internship is housed in the Field Museum’s Keller Science Action Center, which works to translate science into action with measurable results on the ground. Our team includes biologists and anthropologists who recognize the inextricable link between healthy nature and quality of life. As a science-based organization, we employ unique approaches to address today’s conservation challenges.



Calumet Heritage Area Internship, Field Museum, Chicago


The Field Museum is leading the creation of a management plan for the proposed Calumet National Heritage Area, a federally-designated landscape which would span the bi-state Calumet region from the Pullman National Monument through the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The internship’s primary responsibilities are to work with Calumet Heritage project manager and working group to compile existing planning data, convene local and regional partner groups, gather, organize, and synthesize qualitative and quantitative data, create communications and organizational materials, and contribute to report outlines and drafts.

The internship will be housed at the Field Museum with periodic travel to the southeast Chicago metropolitan area and Northwest Indiana.

This is an opportunity for students who:
 Are majoring in Environmental and Urban Studies or a related field.
 Have an interest in connecting ecological and social sciences toward grounded results.
 Would like to engage with a range of stakeholders to create a compelling future for a unique but under-recognized
region of America.



Required Qualifications

 Strong written and verbal communication skills
 Excellent interpersonal skills
 Self-starter with superb organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
 Ability to synthesize and communicate complex concepts
 Familiarity with urban studies theory
 Experience creating and maintaining spreadsheets and databases (qualitative and/or quantitative data)
 Comfortable with social media platforms
 Drivers license and access to a personal vehicle or willingness to take public transportation on a periodic basis.



Preferred Qualifications

 Knowledge of the Calumet region
 Familiarity with urban planning concepts
 Experience with graphic design programs
 Experience with Photoshop
 Working knowledge of Spanish (spoken and written)



Class Level Eligibility

Open to all undergraduate students, with preference given to Environmental and Urban Studies majors or students who are considering the major.
