Jeff Metcalf in Asia Fellowship Grant | Summer 2019

Jeff Metcalf in Asia Fellowship Grant

If you are seeking funding to support an internship located internationally outside of Asia, please also consider applying for a Jeff Metcalf Global Fellowship Grant.

Career Advancement will offer a limited number of grants to undergraduate students who plan to intern in Asia during summer 2019. Students will be selected based on their application and the quality of the proposed professional experience, which must meet the standard required by the Jeff Metcalf in Asia Fellowship Program (see below). Students who receive funding are required to complete and fulfill the responsibilities and requirements of the Metcalf Program.

Students can apply to receive funding for internships in all industries. Preference will be given to students applying for professional experiences in NGOS, cultural associations, libraries, and museums, but we also welcome applications from students working in other fields and industries. For questions about eligibility, please contact Chiara Montanari at chiaram@uchicago.edu.

Applying students must have access to a supervisor. The supervisor must be physically present where the student is working and provide support and mentorship. Independent research projects or freelance experiences are not eligible for this fellowship.

To be eligible to apply students must have already received an offer. Please note: students are not required to have accepted an offer and are welcome to inform their potential employer that acceptance of the role may be contingent on receiving grant funding.

Stipends will range between $1,500 and $5,000. The amount will be decided by the selection committee.

For International Students:
International students are eligible to apply for this fellowship. US work authorization is NOT required (please disregard Handshake's Work Authorization Requirements). However, be advised that the country where your internship is located may have different work eligibility regulations. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the required steps to be eligible to work in the country where your internship is located.

Please Note:
The University of Chicago’s working assumption is that travel to countries or regions with a US Department of State Level 3 or Level 4 Advisory is not permitted for undergraduate participants. The University also uses as indicators the advisory levels published by the Centers for Disease Control and our emergency provider, International SOS. Thus, if the country or region to which travel is contemplated is listed as Level 3 or 4 in the State Department’s travel advisories OR has a warning of level 3 from the Centers for Disease Control OR has an International SOS risk rating of High or Extreme, travel is assumed to be prohibited.

Students who wish to travel to one of these countries must petition the University. Prior to submitting your petition form, they must meet with Chiara Montanari, Associate Director of External Relations or Eric Benjaminson, Assistant Director of Study Abroad, to discuss your plans in light of the Advisory. You must complete your meeting before you submit your grant application. Since this conversation may affect your plans, please schedule your appointment well in advance of the grant application deadline. Contact Chiara Montanari at chiaram@uchicago.edu to schedule a meeting.

For student reference, the CDC website can be found at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices and the International SOS ratings can be found at http://internationalsos.com where one can log in with UChicago’s membership number: 11BCAS084635. This will provide students access to further country-specific information.
