2020-21 Jeff Metcalf Communications and Projects Intern

Communications and Projects Metcalf Internship
Monday through Friday (some evening/weekend hours)
(100 hours/quarter during academic year 20-21—funding through Career Advancement)

The Program on Global Environment (PGE) fosters undergraduate study of the complex intersections of urbanism, environment, and society. The program is home to the Environmental and Urban Studies BA major and minor program, which motivates a deeper theoretical understanding of urbanism and nature, as well as practical strength in addressing urban and environmental challenges and opportunities for sustainable development. PGE augments its curricular initiatives with engaged activity including the Chicago Studies Program, Frizzell Learning and Speaker Series, Student Advisory and Research Council, Urban Environment Working Group and support of collaborative research projects, student internships, fellowships, and international experiences.


Position Summary

The Program on Global Environment is seeking a communications and projects intern for the 2020-21 academic year. The intern will work directly with the Program Director and Program Administrator to develop and maintain website content and social media related to program updates, recruitment for projects, courses and internships, and regular program announcements. The intern will also create original newsletters, articles, and blog posts through storytelling about student projects, faculty research, and initiatives and events related to the various program endeavors, including the Frizzell Series, SARC student group, and Chicago Studies Quarters.


Essential Functions

Communications
·      Draft program communications in coordination with the Program Director and Program Administrator
·      Support any program initiatives or events by coordinating communications strategies with relevant partners
 
Social Media
·      Work in collaboration with the Program Administrator to develop social media content
·      Manage the UChicagoPGE and UChicagoSARC Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts
·      Create social media management plan to be implemented throughout the academic year

Website Management and Content Development
·      Assist the program administrator in manage, maintain and update the program and affiliated websites
·      Create content for all websites, including photos, blogs, newsletters, articles and event descriptions

Publicize and Document Events and Initiatives
·      Develop descriptions and publicity materials of any program events, initiatives and field trips
·      Attend events and document through photography, storytelling, blog posts and recaps
·      Coordinate events communications with University partners

Projects
·      Work with PGE staff and faculty to support research projects and other initiatives
·      Serve as a research assistant to PGE faculty on various environmental and urban projects


Qualifications & Skills
·      Interests in and awareness of environmental and/or urban studies
·      Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
·      Ability to work independently and in close collaboration with others, including faculty
·      Ability to multi-task while paying close attention to detail
·      Ability to take initiative, generate new ideas and independently manage short-term and long-term projects to meet specific deadlines
·      Ability to problem-solve and respond in a timely matter
·      Proficiency with computer applications: Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud applications (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), shared cloud-based programs and other design-based programs
·      Proficiency with social media and communications applications (MailChimp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
·      Proficiency with website development and management, including HTML and Wordpress
·      Any experience with programming in Stata, R or Python, GIS and other mapping software and other applications is helpful, but not required

Employment Dates, Work Schedule, and Reporting
·      Dates of employment: Fall, Winter, Spring quarters (start/end dates negotiable)
·      Hours: 10 hours per week for each quarter
·      Work schedule: M-F, flexed to include evening and weekend hours as needed to provide event support
·      Reporting: weekly supervision with PGE Program Administrator; liaise with Program Director and other students affiliated with PGE; participation in other team meetings, events, field trips and other opportunities, as needed.

Interested students should submit a cover letter expressing interest in environmental and urban studies, describing relevant experience in research and projects, communications, website management and social media, a resume and a short writing sample (no more than one page).
