BSCD Ecology and Evolution Fellowship - 2021

BSCD Ecology and Evolution Fellowship

Please bear in mind that while BSCD Summer Fellowships are currently scheduled to proceed these opportunities may have to be modified or cancelled if the situation warrants.

About the Fellowship

Those students who will be E&E Concentrators in the BSCD and will submit a thesis for the BS degree in BioSci are eligible to apply for one of six summer research stipends with a faculty sponsor.

Students must work with a faculty mentor to develop a proposal. Following a summer of research, the Fellow will enroll in a BioSci course on “Data Analysis” (Bios 26318) in the fall quarter to facilitate the completion of the thesis. Faculty who are eligible mentors include all those on campus whose research encompasses ecology and evolution, and faculty from the Field Museum and Zoos who have an academic appointment with the University of Chicago.

Each of our 6 fellowship opportunities will be unique and based on the faculty mentor and the subject of the research. Although there may be opportunities to utilize museum collections, work at field stations, the Field Museum, the Zoos, as well as research on campus, the research may also have to be remote and we will work within University guidelines.

A faculty committee will select fellows. The Fellowship covers a $5000 stipend and $1500 in lab/field expenses.

Duties and Responsibilities

We will be looking for Fellows who can match their research interests and possible skills with that of a faculty mentor. Possible skills might include molecular methodology, the ability to work in the field, some programming skills, etc. While the ability to work independently will be valued, there will also be collaborative opportunities.

Requirements

Any specific requirements can be discussed with the advisor. Each of our 6 fellowship opportunities will be unique and the requirements will be based on the faculty mentor and the subject of the research. Students should be prepared to engage in developing a research project and following it through to publication.

Class Level Eligibility

The Fellowship opportunity will prioritize Third year students, but Second year students may be considered. Preference may also be given to students who need to work off campus to complete their research and are thus ineligible for other campus funding sources.

Required Materials

Please submit the following:
·    CV
·    Unofficial Transcript
·    Research proposal outlining the aims of your proposed project (2 pages)
·    1 Letter of Recommendation from Faculty advisor. If you are also working off campus with a co-advisor, please submit a letter from that individual too.

Application deadline - April 9, 2021.
