Research Internship with Writer and Journalist Ben Austen

BEN AUSTEN
I'm a writer and journalist on the South Side of Chicago and a lecturer in the Creative Writing program at UChicago. I'm the author of the book High-Risers and the co-host of the podcast Some of My Best Friends Are. I am currently finishing a book about parole and criminal justice reform.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT
I am looking for an assistant to help me research and fact-check a book about parole and criminal justice reform.

JOB DUTIES
Most of the work can be done remotely.

I have a completed manuscript that’s in the editing phase. The job is to help me with gaps in the reporting, with additional research and fact-checking.

If you're interested in learning more about the criminal justice system and prisons, if you're interested in journalism or longform nonfiction writing or the work that goes into putting a book together, then this might be for you. You’ll get a close-up, hands-on work with the process of book making. You’ll be a vital part of this book.

REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should be comfortable with the kind of work that goes into researching a long term paper or thesis. They should be organized and attentive to details, and they should understand the importance of accuracy and journalistic integrity. They should be willing to pick a phone and call people if that’s the best and clearest way to get accurate information.
