Peer Health Advocate

Department Description:

UChicago Student Wellness is part of Campus and Student Life. The mission of UChicago Student Wellness is to provide students with comprehensive health, counseling, and wellness services to support their academic, personal, and professional success. The Peer Health Advocates are committed to supporting their fellow students and empowering them to make healthy choices by connecting them to campus resources and offering outreach and education related to a variety of health and wellness topics.

 

Position Description:

Peer Health Advocates are student representatives of Student Wellness and are tasked with utilizing their campus network to further the UChicago Student Wellness mission. While working for UChicago Student Wellness, Peer Health Advocates report directly to the Health Promotion Coordinator and are a vital part of the Health Promotion team.

 

In addition to holding office hours each week, Peer Health Advocates are required to work at programs throughout the quarter, including some nights and occasional weekends. The Peer Health Advocates are tasked with developing engaging outreach, educational activities, and social media or print content for their fellow UChicago students. In addition, the Peer Health Advocates will support Student Wellness staff with large scale events that address a variety of health topics such as mental health, social well-being, sexual health and LGBTQ+ health access, alcohol and other drugs, sleep hygiene, and more.

 

Job Responsibilities:

· Be a student voice and liaison for Student Wellness

· Develop and execute educational activities for the general student population (undergraduate, graduate and professional students).

· Create and implement marketing, promotional, and educational campaigns.

· Create and participate in engaging and educational social media content for programs and events (such as Instagram Reels, takeovers, and social media stories).

· Create and implement at least 2 wellness focused tabling events or outreach events per quarter.

· Assist with the assessment and evaluation of educational programs and activities.

· Collaborate and provide feedback on a variety of Student Wellness events and programs.

· Assist with Student Wellness’ large scale events, including Wellapalooza, Pet Love, Stress Relief Day, Orientation, and outreach activities

· Participate in weekly Peer Health Advocate team meetings.

· Other duties as assigned by the Health Promotion Coordinator and the Health Promotion team.

 

Availability: Work 4-8 hours per week between programs, meetings, and office hours. Availability to attend programs during days, evenings, and/or weekends is required.

Qualifications for Successful Candidates:

· A current UChicago (College, Graduate, or Professional) student at UChicago by the start of the 2025-2026 Academic Year

· Be available for training starting Saturday, October 4th

· Interpersonal skills and a desire to work with UChicago students

· Organizational and time management skills

· Creative, organized, self-motivated, and willing to work both collaboratively and independently

· Experience in creating diverse types of social media content

· Establishes rapport and builds positive connections with others to help reduce barriers and increase access to Student Wellness

· Effective communication with their peers, other Peer Health Advocates, and the UChicago Student Wellness staff

· Values diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

· Commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, identities, and lived experiences, and advocates for health and wellness equity and inclusivity

· Use of sensitive, thoughtful, and inclusive language

· Strong communication and customer service skills

· Demonstrated interest in student well-being, health promotion/education, behavior change, and other related topics and issues

 

This position is not benefits eligible.

Hours per Week: 4-8 hours per week; Hours are flexible outside department hours and may vary throughout the quarter

Pay Rate: $16.20 per hour
